Chimyl alcohol is a crystalline alcohol product of ether lipids undergoing hydrolysis. It contains an alkyl group connected to glycerin through an ether linkage; a palmityl/hexadecyl substituent is carried in the position 1 of the compound. It’s considered an alkylglycerol and 1-O-palmitylglycerol.
This product has been applied as a reagent and metabolite. In studies of ethanolamine phosphoglycerides, chimyl alcohol was shown to be a precursor to the phospholipid glyceryl ethers and dimethyl acetals.
This alkyl glyceryl ether is obtained from oils from fish-liver and yellow marrow from cattle, and it has been infused in cosmetic products. It’s classified as an emollient skin-conditioner and a viscosity increasing agent.
